This hilarious parody of “Cinderella” stands as one of the most fascinating, audacious, and complex pieces of exploitation cinema from the 1970s. Beyond Disney's saccharine narrative, this film embraces its “adult” rating with visual ingenuity and kitsch opulence that defies the conventions of the erotic (musical) genre.
“Cinderella” is notable for two things: the extraordinary beauty of its star, Cheryl Smith, who, in her role as a virginal yet undeniably sexy Cinderella, manages to fulfill our teenage fantasies; and the sumptuous art direction throughout the film. I mean, even considering the typical budgetary limitations of the era, director Pataki manages to construct a visual universe where eroticism is not an end in itself, but a guiding thread that is extravagantly adorned to convey the decadent playfulness of the decade and, at the same time, mock this Italian folktale, saccharine to the point of nausea by Disney.
“Cinderella” its a masterful journey between satire and traditional fairy tale, injecting irreverent humor with astonishingly solid musical sequences and compositions that evoke the very style of Broadway, but with a delightfully refreshing, libertine twist.
