.ass files

Hi

I came across a subtitle file jux-349.ass (on this site)

I see it has a lot of formatting and font details for every line. However my video players do not recognise the files. My online converter does not have this file type to convert to .srt.

Does this need a special player? It seems like a lot of work but the end result must be great.

Is there any software that converts to .ass?

Thanks
ally

.ASS are the more sophisticated subtitles format.
It allows almost anything (font, size, color, location on the screen, ...)

Unless you have restrictions, you should consider using a better video player. Eg: VLC can read almost any video and subtitles formats.

There are many tools to convert ASS (or SSA) to SRT. Here is a fair one: https://sorz.github.io/asstosrt-wasm/

But of course, all the formating options will be removed in the resulting SRT file.

Thanks. As you know,I do have restrictions as I do this on my mobile.

I'll see if I can find an app just to see the result. I'm happy doing and using .srt files.

Cheers
Ally

Yes, I remember, but VLC is also available on mobile devices.
That being said, I understand when people have a favourite player (I do) :)

There will be an SSA to SRT converter and a sync tool on this site, but I can't tell you when.

I highly recommend Subtitle edit for converting between .ass .srt etc and for removing formating from existing .ass files easily with one or two minor change in export setting. SE also has some powerful search and replace options which means formatting changes or removal can be done that way too/
It is almost trivial to convert to srt from .ass using subtitle edit . You essentially load the .ass and say save as .srt. Obviously you lose advanced formatting
In an .ass file each line has a format that you define globally which means you can use a default (no effort) or one of others that you define. This makes it extremely easy to reformat your display for different files by just changing a few lines of your definitions. One view in SE is a table view where it shows the format specified for each line. Clicking on that item and then right click brings up a menu of the different format defininitions in the file so it is fast to change line by line and better yet you can save definitions you commonly as a king of template you load for a new project so you have all the formats you use commonly without having to renter them

The only downside of subtitle edit is it is so versatile it has numerous options and addons ,drop downs etc so it can be difficult to navigate at first. I find Chatgpt is very helpful in identifying where menus selections are and how to do things in subtitle edit

I also highly recommend VLC player to play advanced subtitle formats.
One limitation of subtitle editor is when displaying advanced formating while editing, it doesn't always render them even though it maybe using VLC under the hood. It has two install options for display while editing one of which is VLC.

Thanks Jonty issue is that I only do leisure work on my phone, as my pc is for business use only.

That means I am limited to what I can use.

I did find two websites, one to convert files, another that can do time shifts if the sync is off by the same amount for every line, and also for merging multiple subtitles files (I did Teenage Lesbian using this to reset the start times in files 2 and 3, then merging files 1,2 and 3).

If you know of an Android equivalent for SE, do let me know.

I haven't used any android subtitle editing tools and although subtitle edit is open source does not have a android version

You might try web conversion tools like :
https://subtitlegen.com/tools

this probably has various converters here is link I found to .srt to ass, search the site to see what other converters
https://ebby.co/subtitle-tools/converter/srt-to-ass

veed also has converter tools you can search site for ass to srt, but i think veed is generally not free?
