Subtitles colours

Hi all

I've worked out how to add colour to subtitles. However, I set my subtitles in my video player to be on a black background.

I cannot see how to apply a black background to subtitles in an .srt file.

My question is this:

If I colour subtitles, would anyone not able to have a background colour be able to see these?

I've tried another player, but that one coloured my subtitles to green with no background and no possibility to change, so I am wondering how normal subs appear to normal users.

Also, if anyone knows how to put background colour on subs, that would be brilliant.

I don't think it's possible to set background colors in SRT. ASS or VTT might work:

+1 with Freejack. SRT may accept some colors, but actually very, very little players understand them.

VTT format is very close to SRT, but it allows colors.

ASS are the best for layout description (you can definie color, position, italic, font, etc... but of course is more complex than SRT or VTT)

Thanks. Out of curiosity, how does your video player handle subtitles? Do you get them in native white and have to adjust the background to suit your eyes?

I looked at ASS some time ago and concluded you can't teach an old bitch new tricks :-)

That's it.
I'm an old fashioned guy, I'm stuck with mostly command line tools, but I set my video player so it display subtitles in this kind of yellow and an outline effect. For my eyes, that's the best contrast for any movie.

I like white on a black background.
