Plot: The story follows Jacob and Katlyn, a young couple whose ordinary night ends when satellites suddenly fall from the sky, triggering a global collapse. Three months later, they struggle to survive in a world without electricity, communication, or reliable knowledge of what caused the disaster. While searching for water and food, they encounter other survivors who offer conflicting explanations, ranging from an asteroid to a nuclear attack. Their desperation grows as their supplies run out and they find little help along the road.
Katlyn cannot deal with the feeling of thirst and hunger. She is annoying and bitchy. The young girl wants Jacob to put food in her stomach. She sometimes blames him for all the misery they are in. Jacob wants to protect her, but he is hungry, too. Her bitchy behaviour wears down his patience. And they hadn't had sex in over two weeks. Why does he stay with her?
Eventually, they discover an apparently abandoned house with working lights and a large stash of canned food. A well-armed man confronts them, explains that the catastrophe was likely caused by the Kessler Syndrome, and implies that access to water and food will come at a disturbing personal cost. The man openly asks for sex with Katlyn.
At first Jacob wants to kill the stranger. But then he asks himself: >Why must it be me, who has to search for food. Katlyn should do her part as well.<
Katlyn feels betrayed. "I am not a prostitute."
"Well, if you want to starve to death, I will die with you. I maybe am not complaining as you do, but I am very hungry, too."
"You can't be serious."
"Don't panic! It's work. Half an hour for a lot of food. If you don't want to, that's fine. We might find some worms and rats that we can eat. But you are gonna kill them from now on. Your princess days are over."
