When using the free version of DeepL, do you find it inserting extra lines so all the timestamps are off?

I've been using the interface built into SubtitleEdit. It's tedious using the manual copy/paste interface but it works. But I always find a mismatch between the original Japanese and the English subtitles. I don't know where the slip is occurring but I'm suspecting DeepL. They reduced their character limit from 5000 to 1500 so I'm guessing they don't like people running big subtitle files through them. Wondering if they're throwing extra lines in too.

I haven't used deepl for a while. Last time was ok, but I've noticed some AI based translators don't always "stick" with original line breaks. Especially with asian language which doesn't use spaces.
For a classic use it make sense, but when one want to keep the exact layout it may be a problem.

Example:
テーブルの上に本があ
る。

will be converted in a single line:

The book is on the table.
(テーブルの上に本がある。)

rather than

The book is on the
table.
(テーブルの上に本がある。)

Once again, it totally makes sense, except for our use :/ I haven't got a solution yet.

have you given it a chance? By converting mp4 to MP3 and cutting the video up in 29 minute chunks, you get around the size requirememnts. By setting up several accounts on different browsers, you get around the 3 free files a day limit.

It translates during the transcribe process (Click transcription options just under the whale icon)

When downloading the transcription as a subtitle, set it to 80 words per segment. Click additional settings. 120 characters per segment. This avoids all of the split sentences and extra timestamps. Although you may find yourself having to split a few sentences. Still better than having to merge hundreds.

Subtitle edit, under tools, can join all of the smaller subtitles together, but make sure you choose the add time option on the bottom of that work window, and add them one at a time in the proper order. (Duh)

It does a pretty good job. Same pronoun problems as usual, but it gets the majority of the punctuation and capitalisation right.

I have a fresh one that I haven't really done anything with other than the first sentence sync. If you'd like to check out the quality, I'd be happy to post it for you.

Oh yes, after they're merged into one subtitle file, using subtitle edit tools again, under change duration, add 0.900 seconds to every line. They are going to be short and will need the extra hang time.


MP3 conversion and the 29 minute length:

I use videoSolo to convert the mp4 to an MP3 (just the soundtrack), and I use 29 minutes because videoSolo adds 0.060 seconds to a 30 minute file, making it just a hair over the time limit of Free Turboscribe. (Of course, I could just pay for it and not have to worry about all of this!)

Plus, I prefer to keep the files about the same size. Just a personal tic of mine.
