Part #1: Download a trailer

Downloading a trailer and uploading it 1:1 constitutes a rule violation. AVsub-Trailers must contain visible subtitles.

Part #2: Create a SRT (subtitles)

We will use this video:

Please click on the image to download the video.

I saved the vid in "C:\tmp\KennaJames". But feel free to save it anywhere you like.

Visit
https://freesubtitles.ai

The steps are outlined on the website; here are some screenshots.

Quote: "Drag & drop your video or audio here or click to browse"

Drag & Drop is very simple, but old people like me prefer to click on the arrow and upload the file like this:

Click "Start Transcription"

Our trailer is very short, so it should be finished within seconds.

Part #3: Use subtitleEdit to enhance the subtitle and check for errors

If you are a novice, use the "Netflix" settings. "Options - Settings - General - Rules/Profile" and use the drop-down-box to select "Netflix" settings.

The next really important thing you should do: "Click to add waveform". If that doesn't work, please ask ChatGPT for help, because it's easy to setup, but it depends very much on your OS.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

The most common mistakes are something like this:

i don't know what you're thinking look

should be

- I don't know what you're thinking.
- Look...

Subtitle has an option which is called "Fix common errors"... It's definitely worth a try.

Whisper-AI is not capable of creating SDH, so you might want to add SDH.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitles#Subtitles_for_the_deaf_or_hard-of-hearing_(SDH)

The next step is optional. SubtitleEdit suggests "end != start" and "start != end" (!= means not equals). Whisper-AI often starts the next subtitle exactly at the same timecode as the previous entry ends. My Smart TV often ignores subtitles that are created that way. So I separated all subs by 12 milliseconds. Standard values are higher.

If your client/phone/TV is able to work with standard Whisper-AI files, you do NOT need to create these gaps.

The next step is also optional, but strongly recommended: CTRL + F8

Since AVsub-Trailers are limited to 90 seconds, I always try to use SubtitleEdit to clear all errors. For long movies this often is too much work.

Part #4: Use Handbrake to Burn-In the subtitle

We will only use a few Handbrake options, but please watch this short tutorial before you start.

At around 5:43, he talks about encoding options (H.264, H.265) says something like: "In general, I have not found that much difference between these ..."
... he talks about H.264 only. The difference between H.264 and H.265 is huge. He explains that at around 4:41 in the video. That will not matter for our trailer, since our trailer won't be longer than 90 seconds (AVsubs MAX for trailers).

As I mentioned before, I stored the trailer in "C:\tmp\KennaJames". You can Drag&Drop or open it the traditional way. See the YouTube video for more information.

Handbrake comes with many PRESETS. The YouTube video explains in detail how to use them, but for our purposes, we select "Very Fast 720p30" and adjust as needed.

We change the settings to:
- H.265 10-bit
- Same As Source
- Medium
- Constant Quality: 23

If you have longer vids (than 90 seconds) you might want to play with these params. In my humble opinion, "Same As Source" should be the Handbrake-Default, but it's not.

This screen might be a little bit confusing, but I want to emphasize checking the new filename (or setting it right).

Since we deal with a trailer, we can copy the audio without encoding it: AACpassthru = copy.

The shown subtitle makes no sense, so we will delete it.

We import our subtitles ...

... and select "Burn In". Press "Start Encode" and wait, or follow the steps from the YouTube video.

I think it's a great idea!

I don't know the average age of people here, but it seems younger people like "Capcut" (don't tell me much about it, I'm the kind who use ffmpeg...)
But I had a look at Capcut, and I think the free version could be enough for a trailer. I'll try it and maybe create a new page in "Help" section. One of the big advantage is Capcut can be run on phones, and from statistics it appears that some month, people using phone can be up to 70% here...!!

In reply to Freejack:

I'm sorry, but I will withdraw my offer for the next few months. MOD_REWRITE and new forum (SMF) will keep me busy.

You mean you already made a guide with Capcut?

No. My guide above is done. I'll leave Capcut to you until I am done with the new forum.
