The story follows April (Alina Lopez), a teen babysitter who arrives at a wealthy man's home for what seems like a normal job. Trent Perry, the homeowner, welcomes her warmly, and as they talk, he learns she's raising her younger brother alone after their parents' deaths. Trent's questions get increasingly personal, but April stays polite.
Later, when she asks about his wife, Trent vaguely says she's “at work,” which feels suspicious. After putting the kids to bed, April finds one of their crayon drawings—showing a happy family but with the figure labeled “Mom” angrily scribbled out. Disturbed, she researches Trent online and discovers his wife is actually dead.
When Trent catches her, he breaks down and confesses that his wife died during childbirth. He wanted a daughter, but they had a son. Later, he entered a relationship with a woman named Claire, the children's wet nurse, hoping for a daughter; instead, they had two more sons. Claire has since disappeared.
Trent then shocks April by proposing that she become a surrogate and carry him a daughter in exchange for enough money to solve her financial struggles. April initially refuses, but, torn between desperation and fear, hesitates when he promises to fund her education and support her brother. Alina stands in the hallway. She doesn't know whether to leave immediately or if she's being selfish, not thinking of her brother. The young girl feels lost, reluctantly considering the offer as Trent leads her upstairs.
